St George City FA and Sydney FC’s under 18s, 20s and first grade teams are set to play against each other at UOW Jubilee Oval, Kogarah, on Sunday 26 February 2017.
This is the first time sport clubs other than the St George Illawarra Dragons have been able to use the grounds since George River Council resumed direct management of the stadium.
General Manager of St George Football Association, Craig Kiely, said being able to play at the stadium “presents a unique opportunity for local St George players to experience playing on the same ground that some of the best domestic and international players have played previously”.
“The venue provides a professional, state-of-the-art facility that is unmatched in our district,” he explained.
“Players are able to play on one of the best pitches in the country and spectators can enjoy the comforts of a first class venue.”
“We hope to see the venue hosting our local finals matches and also potentially the future home games for St George City,” he added.
General Manager of Georges River Council, Gail Connolly, said this is a free event hosted by Council and hopes lots of families and fans from the local area will come to the games.
As part of the new deal with the St George Illawarra Dragons, Council resumed management of the stadium in February 2017 and saw the opportunity to make the stadium more accessible to other sporting clubs and codes.
In opening up the stadium to other sporting and community groups, Council can ensure greater use of the stadium and establish a more vibrant sporting precinct in the local area, while also improving the long-term commercial viability for UOW Jubilee Oval.
Council has locked in a commitment with the Dragons to have priority access to the stadium for the 2017 NRL season and beyond for games and training requirements.
